World’s Best Lasagna Recipe

April 25, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

Growing up in an Italian family, I was surrounded by the comforting aroma of simmering sauces, bubbling cheese, and perfectly layered pasta. Italian food has always held a special place in my heart—it’s hearty, delicious, and always brings people together. Of all the traditional dishes we enjoyed, lasagna was the one that made every occasion feel extra special. And this recipe? It’s hands-down the World’s Best Lasagna.

💬 Why You’ll Love This Lasagna

This isn’t just any lasagna—it’s a rich, flavorful, slow-simmered version with ground beef, sweet Italian sausage, and a creamy ricotta filling. The depth of flavor comes from letting the sauce gently cook for over an hour, filling your kitchen with that classic Italian comfort you know and love.

🛒 Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage
  • ¾ lb lean ground beef
  • ½ cup minced onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6 oz) cans tomato paste
  • 2 (6.5 oz) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 1½ tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 4 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (divided)

For the Cheese Mixture:

  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp salt

For Assembly:

  • 12 pre-cooked lasagna noodles
  • ¾ lb mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese

👩‍🍳 How to Make the World’s Best Lasagna

1. Make the Meat Sauce
In a large Dutch oven, cook the sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until browned.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley.
Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 1½ hours—stirring occasionally to develop those deep, rich flavors.

2. Prepare the Ricotta Filling
In a small mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley, and ½ teaspoon salt. Set aside.

3. Preheat and Assemble
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Layer as follows:

  • Layer 1: Spread 1½ cups of the meat sauce on the bottom of the dish.
  • Layer 2: Arrange noodles to cover the sauce.
  • Layer 3: Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  • Layer 4: Add one-third of the mozzarella slices.
  • Layer 5: Spoon another 1½ cups of meat sauce and sprinkle with ¼ cup Parmesan cheese.

Repeat the layers, ending with meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan on top.

4. Bake
Cover tightly with foil (spray the underside with oil to prevent sticking).
Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing—this helps the layers hold together perfectly.

🔁 Make-Ahead & Storage Tips

  • Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate (unbaked) for up to 1 day. Ensure the sauce is cool before layering to avoid bacteria growth.
  • Freeze: Freeze cooked or uncooked lasagna for up to 3 months. Wrap tightly in foil and plastic wrap.
  • Reheat: Cover and bake at 350°F until hot and bubbly. Avoid microwaving uncovered—this dries it out.

🍷 Serving Suggestions

Pair this classic lasagna with a simple green salad, crusty garlic bread, and a glass of red wine—Chianti is a perfect match. And don’t forget, any extra meat sauce makes a great pairing with spaghetti for another easy meal!
