One Pot Ground Beef Orzo

September 17, 2025 by el hassan Leave a Comment

This Ground Beef Orzo is one of those comforting, weeknight dinners you’ll want on repeat. It’s creamy, hearty, and made in just one pot—perfect when you’re short on time but craving something cozy and filling.

Think of it like a shortcut risotto—same creamy texture, but with way less effort. The ground beef, tomato sauce, cream, and Parmesan make the orzo rich and satisfying, while fresh spinach adds a little balance. Best of all? It’s ready in about 30 minutes!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • One-pot wonder – less cleanup and big flavor.
  • 30 minutes – dinner on the table fast.
  • Family-friendly – even picky eaters love this one.
  • Cozy & creamy – pasta + beef + Parmesan = comfort food.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef – lean (90%+) works best.
  • Onion & garlic – for a flavorful base.
  • Red pepper flakes – optional, adds gentle heat.
  • Italian seasoning – an easy all-in-one herb blend.
  • Orzo pasta – small, rice-shaped pasta.
  • Canned tomato sauce – or passata if you’re in the U.K. or Australia.
  • Beef broth – deepens the flavor.
  • Heavy cream – makes the sauce rich and silky.
  • Worcestershire sauce – adds umami depth (don’t skip!).
  • Parmesan cheese – stir it in for creaminess and sprinkle more on top.
  • Spinach – for freshness and color.

How to Make Ground Beef Orzo

  1. Brown the beef – Add ground beef to a large pot or Dutch oven. Let it brown for a few minutes without stirring, then break it up with a spoon. Add onion and cook until softened.
  2. Add aromatics – Stir in garlic, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning, and orzo. Cook for 1 minute.
  3. Build the sauce – Pour in tomato sauce, beef broth, heavy cream, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well, then let simmer gently. Cook until the orzo is tender and the sauce has thickened, stirring occasionally.
  4. Finish – Remove from heat. Stir in Parmesan cheese and spinach. Cover for a couple of minutes so the spinach wilts and the sauce thickens.
  5. Serve – Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan before serving.

Pro Tips

  • Keep an eye on the liquid. If the orzo isn’t fully cooked but the pan looks dry, add a splash of broth. If there’s too much liquid at the end, remove from heat, cover, and let it sit— the orzo will soak it up.
  • Grate your own Parmesan—it melts better and has the best flavor.
  • Don’t swap the cream for milk or half-and-half; it may curdle from the tomatoes.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Make it spicy – Add extra red pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne.
  • Different protein – Swap beef for ground turkey, chicken, or Italian sausage.
  • Extra veggies – Mushrooms, zucchini, or bell peppers would be great additions.

What to Serve with Ground Beef Orzo

This dish is rich, so lighter sides work best:

  • Simple green salad with balsamic or honey mustard dressing.
  • Garlic bread (a must for scooping up the sauce!).
  • Steamed or roasted veggies like asparagus, broccoli, or cauliflower.

Storage & Leftovers

  • Fridge: Store in an airtight container for 3–4 days. Orzo will continue to absorb liquid, so stir in a splash of cream or broth when reheating.
  • Reheat: Warm gently on the stovetop or microwave in short bursts.
  • Freezer: Not recommended—pasta will turn mushy.
