  • Cool Ingredients: Let the chocolate and butter mixture cool before adding to avoid cooking the eggs.

Best German Chocolate Cake Recipe:

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 12
Equipment: Three 9-inch cake pans, mixing bowls, saucepan

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 4 oz German chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, pour boiling water over the chopped German chocolate and stir until melted. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla and the cooled chocolate mixture.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with flour.
  5. Beat egg whites to stiff peaks, then gently fold them into the batter. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting: In a saucepan, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Stir in coconut and pecans, then allow the frosting to cool to a spreadable consistency.
  8. Once the cakes are cooled, spread the frosting between the layers and on top and around the sides of the cake.

Enjoy Every Slice
This Best German Chocolate Cake is more than just a dessert—it’s a celebration of chocolate, coconut, and pecans in every bite. Perfect for any occasion, this cake will have everyone asking for seconds!
