Amish White Bread is a deliciously dense and slightly sweet treat that pairs wonderfully with butter. While it may take a bit of practice to get the yeast right, once you’ve mastered it, this bread is sure to become a family favorite. If you’re new to baking with yeast, here’s a tip: look for small, tiny “mini fireworks” in the foam after the yeast has risen in warm water—this means it’s working perfectly. The key is allowing the yeast to foam properly and ensuring the dough rises at the right temperature. For a less sweet option, you can reduce the sugar. This recipe creates soft, flavorful loaves perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 6 cups bread flour
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
Instructions
- Dissolve sugar in warm water and stir in yeast. Let it rise until the yeast forms a creamy foam.
- Mix in salt and oil. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, stirring until well combined.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth. Place in a well-oiled bowl, covering with a damp cloth. Let rise for about 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, knead for a few minutes, and divide it into two portions. Shape each portion into loaves and place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans. Let rise for another 30 minutes, until the dough has risen just above the top of the pans.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for about 30 minutes, until golden brown.
- Let cool before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
